Pena Palace is a fairytale wedding venue in Portugal that will make any bride’s dreams come true- it has the most stunning views and its gardens are breathtakingly beautiful as well. There is so much history here, from King Ferdinand of Orleans visiting Pena Palace in the hills with fabulous views and winding pathways, to Queen Maria’s famous garden.
Pena Palace has been open for weddings since 1982 and it is the most beautiful wedding venue in Portugal! It has a range of stunning features – from the breathtakingly scenic gardens with ancient trees that are over 200 years old, to the spectacular views of both Pena Park and The National Forest.

The best time of year to get married at Pena Palace is in the fall, when the leaves turn a glorious red and gold. One of my favorite weddings I’ve done was in October because it was so special with all those beautiful colors!

The destination wedding of Pedro and Yi at Pena Palace in Portugal
In July of this year, we photographed what to many can only be described as the dream wedding. Set in the stunning location of Sintra, Portugal, the sunset wedding of Pedro and Yi was held at the majestic Pena Palace. Set high on a hill with breathtaking views across the landscape, the exquisite Palacio da Pena is regarded as one of the top 10 tourist attractions in Portugal and is a wonderful choice for a fairytale wedding.
We started the day with Yi getting ready at their fabulous villa overlooking the ocean near Cascais, just under 40 minutes drive from Lisbon. Although Pedro and Yi live in San Francisco, they invested in a second home in Pedro’s native country of Portugal, which they also rent out to holidaymakers throughout the year. It was a beautiful day, without a cloud in the sky. We arrived to a flurry of activity as Yi and her bridesmaids were having their hair and make up done and while Yi’s two adorable twin baby boys were looked after by the nanny.
With hair and makeup finished, it was time for Yi to get into her beautiful wedding gown before heading to the wedding ceremony in a classic 1940’s Citroen car. We followed the car through the wonderful rolling landscape to Sintra before taking the drive up the steep winding road to the palace itself and where Pedro and their guests were waiting.
The mist rolled in as the ceremony began, creating a sense that we were literally floating in the clouds. The setting sun basked the scene in warm soft light as Pedro and Yi exchanged their vows. After capturing some beautiful photographs of the couple before the sun finally set, the couple joined their guests for a champagne reception with live music and canapés, before heading inside to enjoy their wedding breakfast and speeches.
There was some fabulous entertainment with some impressive flamenco dancing for everyone to enjoy following by more live music at the end of the evening and dancing. It was the perfect end to what was an incredibly beautiful wedding in a magical fairytale setting.
