Chelsea Old Town Hall Wedding Photographer from £350
Chelsea Old Town Hall is the best-looking register office in London, and most couples who marry there already know it. The Grade II-listed neoclassical front on the King’s Road, the columns, the flight of steps that every couple stops on for the confetti — it does more for a wedding photograph than most venues charging thousands.
What surprises people is that photographing a wedding here does not have to cost thousands either — this is genuinely affordable Chelsea Old Town Hall wedding photography, without a cheaper standard of work behind it. A register office ceremony runs for half an hour, not half a day, so I price it by the hour: £350 for the first. The work itself is exactly what I would bring to a Claridge’s wedding — twenty years of it, every frame edited, your gallery online within 24 hours.
This page covers what you need to know about hiring a Chelsea Old Town Hall wedding photographer: what it costs, the ceremony rooms and how many people each holds, where to walk afterwards, and how I work on the day.

Booked by the hour, which is what a register office wedding actually needs — and the reason this works out such good value compared with a full-day London package. Most couples here take two hours: the ceremony, the steps, and a walk down the King’s Road afterwards.

The Venue
Why Couples Choose Chelsea Old Town Hall
John McKean Brydon designed the building in the 1880s, and a hundred and fifty years later it is still doing the heavy lifting for wedding photographs. Neoclassical stone, tall windows, and a portico that turns an ordinary Tuesday into an occasion.
The steps out front are the reason half of London gets married here. Biodegradable confetti is allowed and actively encouraged, so the moment you walk out of those doors is the picture most couples end up framing.

Inside, the rooms are small and the light is good — tall windows on the King’s Road side flood the Brydon Room for most of the day, which matters more than any amount of decoration. A register office ceremony here is short, uncluttered and entirely about the people in the room, and that is exactly the kind of wedding I most like to photograph.
A Photographer’s Guide
The Ceremony Rooms at Chelsea Old Town Hall
Kensington and Chelsea Register Office runs three main ceremony rooms here, and they are very different in scale. Larger ceremonies can also be held in the Small Hall or Main Hall, which are booked separately through the council.
The Brydon Room
The largest and the most requested. Recently redesigned in neutral tones with mahogany joinery and imposing double doors, and blessed with tall windows that give beautiful natural light through most of the day. It has a proper aisle, which is rarer in a register office than you would think.
The Rossetti Room
The one couples fall for. Jade-green panelling, classical paintings in gilt frames, parquet floors and a carved alcove usually dressed with fresh flowers. Small enough that I work quietly and close, which is where the honest pictures come from anyway.
The Harrington Room
Built for elopements and micro-ceremonies — clean lines, a fern-green palette, mahogany accents and a sculptural glass light as the focal point. Availability is more limited than the other rooms, so ask early if this is the one you want.
The Small Hall & Main Hall
For guest lists beyond the Brydon Room, the halls upstairs can be hired for the ceremony and often for a reception straight afterwards. Worth asking the council about if you want everything to happen under one roof.

The Approach
How I Photograph a Chelsea Register Office Wedding
Documentary. I do not direct the ceremony, arrange guests, or stop anything to fix the light. In a room holding twelve people, a photographer who takes charge becomes the event — so I stay out of it and watch.
A ceremony here is quick: the registrar, the vows, the rings, the signing, and out onto the steps. Twenty to thirty minutes, and none of it repeatable. I photograph all of it rather than asking you to do anything twice.
The moments that end up mattering are rarely the ones anyone plans — a mother’s face during the vows, a friend laughing at the back, the two of you in the doorway before you have realised anyone is watching.

After the Ceremony
Where We Go for Portraits
Chelsea makes this easy. Step out of the Town Hall and you are on the King’s Road, with the river ten minutes south and some of the best architecture in London in every direction.
St Luke’s Church & Gardens
Gothic Revival stonework and mature trees, and the nearest proper greenery to the Town Hall. The light coming through the arches in the late afternoon is the best directional light in the area.
The King’s Road
Shopfronts, taxis, the occasional red bus. If you want photographs that could only be London and could only be Chelsea, we barely have to move.
Chelsea Library
It shares the same facade as the Town Hall, which makes it a useful second option when the front steps are busy with the wedding after yours.
Albert Bridge & the Embankment
The prettiest bridge in London and a proper river backdrop. Worth the walk if you have booked two hours or more, and unbeatable at dusk when the lights come on.
Further afield
With a longer booking there is time for the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gardens, or a taxi across to Westminster. Not necessary by any means — but if you want the whole city in your gallery, it is very doable.

Affordable, Not Cheap
Affordable Chelsea Register Office Wedding Photography
Couples looking for affordable or budget wedding photography at Chelsea Old Town Hall are usually worried they will get a lesser photographer. That is not how this works. A full London wedding takes twelve hours on site and a day either side; a Chelsea register office wedding takes an hour or two. The pricing simply reflects that — it is not a stripped-back service, and there is no cheaper tier of my work.
You get every frame edited by me, delivered at full resolution within 24 hours, with nothing held back to sell you later. No proofs to buy, no albums you have to decline, no per-image charges. The couple paying several times as much for a country house wedding gets the same photographer and the same editing — they are simply buying more hours.

About Me
Your Chelsea Old Town Hall Photographer
I am Barrie Downie, a London documentary wedding photographer with twenty years of weddings behind me — Claridge’s and the Mandarin Oriental, country houses, destination weddings, and a great many register office ceremonies including plenty at Chelsea.
My approach comes from photojournalism: I observe and react rather than direct, so what you are left with is a record of what actually happened rather than a version arranged for the camera.
Whether it is eight of you in the Harrington Room or thirty-eight in the Brydon, I would be glad to hear about it. Check your date above, book online, or send me a note.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Chelsea Old Town Hall wedding photographer cost?+
One hour is £350, two hours £550 and three hours £750. Every booking includes all images fully edited, an online gallery ready within 24 hours, high-resolution downloads and a shareable gallery link. Most couples at Chelsea book two hours, which covers the ceremony, the confetti on the steps and portraits afterwards.
Do you offer cheap or budget wedding photography at Chelsea Old Town Hall?+
I would not call it cheap, and I would be wary of anyone who does — but it is genuinely good value. Coverage starts at £350 because a register office ceremony takes an hour rather than a full day, not because anything has been taken out. Every image is edited by me, delivered at full resolution within 24 hours, with no proofs to buy and no per-image charges. If you are searching for affordable or budget wedding photography at Chelsea Register Office, that is exactly what this is: the same photographer and the same editing as a full-day London wedding, priced for the hours you actually need.
Which ceremony rooms are available at Chelsea Old Town Hall?+
Three main rooms. The Brydon Room holds up to 38 guests and is the largest, with tall windows and excellent natural light. The Rossetti Room holds 12 and has jade panelling and gilt-framed paintings. The Harrington Room holds 8 and is designed for elopements and micro-ceremonies. Larger ceremonies can also be held in the Small Hall or Main Hall. Rooms are booked through Kensington and Chelsea Register Office.
Is confetti allowed at Chelsea Old Town Hall?+
Yes — biodegradable confetti is permitted and encouraged on the front steps, which is where almost every couple has their confetti photograph taken. It is one of the reasons the venue photographs so well, and worth telling your guests in advance so someone is actually holding the confetti when you walk out.
Is Chelsea Old Town Hall the same as Chelsea Register Office?+
Yes. Chelsea Old Town Hall on the King’s Road houses the Kensington and Chelsea Register Office. You will see it called Chelsea Register Office, Chelsea Registry Office or Chelsea Old Town Hall — all the same Grade II-listed building at SW3 5EE.
Where are the best places for photos near Chelsea Old Town Hall?+
The front steps first, for the confetti. After that St Luke’s Church and Gardens are about five minutes on foot, the King’s Road is directly outside, Chelsea Library next door shares the same facade, and Albert Bridge and the Embankment are a short walk south. With a three-hour booking there is time for the Royal Albert Hall or Kensington Gardens.
How far in advance should I book a photographer?+
For a Saturday, 10 to 14 months is sensible — Chelsea is one of the busiest register offices in London and popular dates go early. Weekday ceremonies are often available at much shorter notice. You can check your date against my diary at the top of this page.
Can you photograph an elopement or a very small ceremony?+
Yes, and they are among my favourite bookings. The Harrington Room holds eight and the Rossetti twelve, so ceremonies here are often just the couple, two witnesses and a handful of family. There is no minimum guest count for my coverage and one hour is usually plenty.
