Wedding Photography at St Pancras Renaissance

The Gothic-revival hotel above St Pancras station is one of London's most photogenic wedding venues — that staircase, the Booking Office bar, and one of the most cinematic skylines in London at dusk. Twenty years of London wedding work, the same editorial-meets-documentary approach, made for a building this dramatic.

Why St Pancras Renaissance

The building was designed by George Gilbert Scott and built between 1868 and 1876 as the Midland Grand Hotel — a huge, ornate Victorian Gothic fantasy of turrets and spires, Grade I listed since 1967. It closed as a hotel in 1935, spent decades as railway offices, and came within a whisker of demolition before reopening as a hotel in 2011, more than 130 years after it first opened. Few London wedding venues carry that much history, or that much drama in a single staircase. It suits a couple who wants a genuinely grand, unmistakably London backdrop — gold leaf, Gothic arches, and one of the most recognisable buildings in the city, right above one of its busiest stations.

The Spaces

The Grand Staircase

Licensed for ceremonies of up to 50 — the hotel's most famous single feature, and a genuine photographic set-piece in its own right.

Hansom Hall

The largest of the event spaces — up to 375 guests theatre-style, with a 30-metre ceiling. The natural choice for a bigger wedding breakfast or reception.

The Gallery

Licensed for up to 250 — a strong middle-ground option between the intimacy of the Grand Staircase and the scale of Hansom Hall.

Smaller Licensed Rooms

The Ladies' Smoking Room (100), The Exchange (60), The Quarters (50), the Billiard Room (30) and the Station Master's Office (20) — all licensed for ceremonies, for couples planning a smaller, more intimate day.

At St Pancras Renaissance

How I Work at St Pancras Renaissance

Editorial for the portraits, documentary for the rest of the day. The Grand Staircase alone is worth building real time into the schedule for — it photographs completely differently depending on the light and the hour, and it's not a room to rush. For the ceremony and reception, I stay out of the way and let the day run itself. Quiet throughout.I'll always confirm access to the staircase and any restricted areas with the hotel ahead of the day, so nothing is being worked out for the first time when your guests arrive.

Portraits Nearby

The Booking Office bar, downstairs in the old station ticket hall, is worth using for a different register of portrait entirely. Outside, the station's Gothic frontage and the surrounding King's Cross area at dusk give one of the most cinematic skylines in London.

Your St Pancras Renaissance Wedding Photographer

I'm Barrie Downie — a London wedding photographer with twenty years behind the lens, working at the editorial end of the craft. My approach comes from photojournalism: I react rather than direct, so what you end up with is a record of what actually happened, made in one of London's most recognisable buildings. I only take on a limited number of weddings a year, which is what makes a one-week full gallery turnaround possible. If you're planning a wedding at St Pancras Renaissance, I'd love to hear about it.
