Ravello sits a thousand feet above the Amalfi coast, and you cannot drive into the top of it.

There is a reason couples fly half a wedding party here from London, New York and Hong Kong. The Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone looks out over the Tyrrhenian Sea as though the view was drawn before the villa was built around it. The cobbled lanes hold a soft, warm light from about five in the evening until dusk. The Duomo sits in a piazza that has been doing its job since the eleventh century. This page is the practical one: if you are getting married here and thinking about bringing a photographer out from the UK, this is what you actually need to know.

The venues

The places worth flying for

Six places in and around Ravello that couples ask me about. I have photographed at Villa Cimbrone and Villa Eva; the rest are here so you can see the options. Check current availability and packages with each venue directly.

Portraits

Villa Cimbrone

The one most couples come to Ravello for. An eleventh-century villa with a terrace lined in marble busts looking straight out over the sea, cloisters that photograph like a film set, and gardens that do different things with different light all day. It is where I took Jayssen and Karuna's portraits, and it is as good in person as it looks.

Gardens

Villa Rufolo

Thirteenth-century gardens laid out on a shelf above the sea. The concert terrace, the mediaeval tower, the umbrella pines. Rufolo does high-drama Italian romance better than almost anywhere else on the coast, and it is at its best in the late-afternoon light before sunset.

Hotel

Belmond Hotel Caruso

The other luxury option in Ravello. An eleventh-century palace, now a Belmond hotel, with a cliff-edge infinity pool looking out over the coast. Terrace ceremonies, marble interiors, and some of the most understated elegance on the Amalfi coast.

Catholic ceremony

Duomo di Ravello

The town's cathedral in the main piazza, and the traditional setting for Catholic ceremonies here. Bronze doors cast in 1179, an atmospheric interior, and the piazza right outside for photographs as you come out.

Civil ceremony

Piazza Duomo and the town hall

The town hall on the main piazza handles civil ceremonies. Simple, warm and unmistakably Italian. It pairs well with a Villa Cimbrone drinks reception or a walk down to Villa Rufolo, and the piazza itself is one of the best pre-dinner portrait locations in town.

Beyond Ravello

Positano, Amalfi and Villa Eva

The coast stretches both ways. Positano for pastel-cliff drama, Amalfi itself for harbourside civil ceremonies, and Villa Eva in Ravello for a more private, estate-style wedding. Villa Eva is where Jayssen and Karuna had their ceremony, in the garden looking out to sea. If your day moves between places, I build the travel time into the timeline.

How I work

Light, timing, and the people in the room

In that order. I am an editorial photographer at heart, so I care about light, framing, and the kind of images that still feel alive in twenty years. I am a documentary photographer in practice, so I stay out of your day, I do not choreograph moments that should be left alone, and I keep the camera pointed at the reactions rather than the setups.

In Ravello that means a handful of properly considered portraits on the Terrace of Infinity or in the Rufolo gardens, the ones you will print large, and a much bigger gallery of unposed photographs of the people you love, in a town that looks cinematic without trying.

I have been to Ravello once, for Jayssen and Karuna. I had already photographed their civil ceremony in London, and out there we did portraits at Villa Cimbrone before a late-afternoon ceremony in the garden at Villa Eva, then went up to its rooftop as the sun went down.

Why fly someone out

The honest version

There are excellent Italian photographers on the Amalfi coast. The reason to bring someone with you from the UK is mostly about continuity, not geography.

  • Someone you've actually metBy the time we arrive in Ravello we will have met in person, spoken a handful of times and planned the day in detail. On the morning of the wedding you are not introducing yourself to a stranger in a second language.
  • Destination experienceRavello, Venice, Florence, Lake Como, Santorini, Sintra, Austria, Switzerland, New York and Sydney. Destination work is its own discipline: the logistics, the light, and the timings with planners.
  • Preparation, not guessworkI have photographed in Ravello once, so I will be straight with you: I do not know every corner of the town. What I do is arrive the day before, walk your venue at the hour the ceremony and portraits will happen, and plan around the light and the steps before the day starts.
  • Editorial and documentaryConsidered, carefully framed portraits on the terrace, and honest unposed coverage of everything else. Ravello deserves the editorial treatment. Your mother-in-law crying during the speeches deserves the documentary one.
  • Everything in duplicateTwo cameras on me all day, dual-slot recording so every frame is written to two cards at once, and backup bodies and lenses in the bag. You cannot pop to a camera shop in rural Italy on a Saturday.
  • The gallery waiting when you landYou fly home after the honeymoon and the full edited gallery is already there. Within seven days of the last shutter click, not six weeks and not three months.

The process

From enquiry to gallery

Four stages, from the first email to the link arriving in your inbox a week after the wedding.

01

Enquiry and a call

You send a short enquiry. I reply personally within a couple of hours. We get on a call, or meet in London if you are based here, talk through the Ravello plan, and confirm I am a fit before anyone signs anything.

02

Planning the day

Venue, timings, golden-hour windows, Catholic or civil ceremony, travel between locations. I coordinate directly with your planner if you have one. No last-minute surprises.

03

Out the day before

I travel the day before, scout the venue in person and meet your planner. If you have added a pre-wedding shoot, we photograph the two of you in the town that evening. Then the day itself.

04

Home, edited, delivered

I fly home, edit properly, and deliver the full high-resolution gallery within seven days. A private online gallery, full download, no watermarks, yours to share with family anywhere.

I will send a full quote once I know your date. A day-before pre-wedding shoot can be added, and it is the best way to get Ravello itself into a gallery of just the two of you. UK weddings are priced differently, on my wedding photography prices page.

Ravello is not the only part of Italy I work in. There are longer guides to Tuscany, the South of France and Pena Palace in Sintra, and the destination wedding photographer page covers everywhere else. The portfolio is the quickest way to see how a whole day looks.

The Ravello FAQ

Answered the way I would on a call

How much does it cost to fly you out to Ravello?

My destination collection is £3,995 for eight hours, with extra hours at £200 each. Travel and accommodation are added at cost, with no markup. For Ravello that usually means flights to Naples, the transfer up the coast and two or three nights nearby. I will send a full quote once I know your date.

Do we need a pre-wedding shoot in Ravello?

You don't need one, but I would recommend it. A couples shoot the day before means Ravello itself ends up in a gallery of just the two of you: the cobbled streets at the end of the day, the view from Villa Rufolo, the walk down to the Duomo steps. An hour or two, no pressure. Jayssen and Karuna's portraits at Villa Cimbrone were taken the same way, before the ceremony rather than during it.

What if ours is a Catholic ceremony?

The Duomo is a beautiful setting, with bronze doors from 1179 and the piazza outside. I have not photographed a ceremony there, but I have photographed plenty of church weddings, and I always check with the priest beforehand where I can stand and whether photography is allowed during the service.

What happens if your equipment fails?

It doesn't, because I shoot with two cameras, dual-card recording, backup bodies in the bag and every memory card duplicated as I shoot. Every image is written to two cards at once. If a camera fails I pick up the second one, and you would never notice.

How quickly do we get the photos?

Within one week of the wedding. The full gallery, fully edited, delivered online. It is the main reason I only take on a limited number of weddings each year: the one-week promise only works if I am not stacking Saturdays end to end.

Which other locations do you cover?

Anywhere in Italy and Europe, and further. I have photographed weddings in Ravello, Florence, Venice, Lake Como, Santorini, Sintra, Austria and Switzerland, and pre-wedding shoots in Paris and Iceland. If your destination is not one of those, ask anyway and I will tell you honestly whether I have been.

If Ravello is the place, let's talk properly

I only photograph a handful of destination weddings a year, which is how the one-week gallery works. Send me your date and I'll come back to you personally.
