A Special Day at St Paul’s: Nala & Maxi’s Christening
There are some photography assignments that just feel like catching up with old friends, and this was definitely one of them. Having known Sam since she was eighteen, photographing her children’s christening at St Paul’s Cathedral felt less like work and more like being part of a family celebration.
The morning started with what turned out to be my favorite shots of the day. While everyone was gathering outside St Paul’s, Maxi decided those famous steps were far too tempting not to explore. Back and forth he went, turning the cathedral entrance into his own personal adventure playground. Meanwhile, Nala had other ideas about how to pass the time – treating us all to an impromptu ballet performance in front of the main entrance to St Paul’s. As a photographer, these are the genuine moments you hope for – kids just being kids, even in front of one of London’s most iconic buildings.
The ceremony itself was exactly as Matt and Sam wanted it – intimate and meaningful, with just their closest family and friends sharing the moment. St Paul’s Cathedral might be grand, but somehow the children’s natural enthusiasm made it feel just right. Watching through my lens as Maxi looked up in wonder at the enormous domes above, and catching Nala’s delight as she discovered how her voice echoed in the space – these are the kind of natural moments that make the best photographs.
The godparents made their promises, family members dabbed at tears (while trying to hide their smiles at the children’s running commentary), and the whole ceremony had that perfect mix of meaningful tradition and relaxed family warmth that Sam and Matt do so well.
Afterwards, everyone headed to 34 Mayfair for lunch, where the celebration really got into full swing. The restaurant’s elegant setting somehow managed to feel both special and comfortable – exactly right for a family celebration.
Having photographed Sam through so many moments over the years, it was particularly special to be there capturing this one. From our first shoot when she was barely out of her teens to now watching her children light up one of London’s most famous cathedrals with their personalities – it’s been quite a journey to document.
The day wrapped up with two tired but happy children, proud parents, and memory cards full of moments that really tell the story of who this family is – not just how they look on a special day, but how they laugh, play, and celebrate together.
It’s days like these that remind me why I love what I do. Yes, the venue was spectacular and the occasion was significant, but the real joy came from capturing those unplanned moments – Maxi’s determined climbing, Nala’s spontaneous twirls, the quiet smiles between Sam and Matt, and all the little interactions that make a family uniquely themselves.
A christening at St Paul’s Cathedral could have been an overwhelmingly formal affair, but Nala and Maxi made sure it was filled with laughter, movement, and pure joy. I couldn’t have asked for a better day or a more genuine celebration to photograph.

Planning a Christening at St Paul’s Cathedral?
As someone who photographs christenings at St Paul’s Cathedral, I’m often asked about who can be baptised there. St Paul’s Cathedral has specific eligibility requirements for baptisms. The Cathedral offers baptisms to members of the Order of the British Empire and their children or grandchildren, as well as members of the Order of St Michael and St George and their children or grandchildren. If you’re considering St Paul’s for your child’s christening, I’d be delighted to discuss capturing your special day.
Having photographed numerous ceremonies in this historic setting, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities the cathedral presents. From working with the magnificent natural light to knowing the best angles and moments to capture, my experience ensures your photographs will honor both the significance of the occasion and the natural joy of your family celebration.
Every family has their own story, and I believe in capturing the personality of your child and your family alongside the grandeur of the setting. Whether it’s those precious moments before the ceremony, the intimate service itself, or the celebrations afterward, I work discretely to document every special moment.
