Twenty Years in Chichester

I lived here for two decades. Goodwood House still uses my photos.

A luxury wedding · Goodwood House

Chichester isn't a city I turn up and photograph. It's a city I lived in for twenty years.

For much of that time I was one of Goodwood House's recommended wedding photographers — and some of the wedding images Goodwood still uses in their own marketing and on the Goodwood website are mine, shot years ago and kept around because they still do the job. That's the part of my CV I'm most quietly proud of. When a venue with that kind of history chooses to represent itself with your pictures, you take that as a compliment that matters more than any award.

What that means in practice: I know which hedgerow at Goodwood catches the last light at six in the evening. I know where in the Dairy Barn at Southend the speeches always get loudest. I know that the wind along Chichester Harbour tends to lift a veil at precisely the wrong moment — and that that's usually the picture you'll want to print.

This page is a quieter pitch than most. If you're getting married in Chichester, on the Goodwood Estate, at Southend Barns, or anywhere across West Sussex — have a proper look at the portfolio, read the About, and if it feels like a fit, get in touch. I only take on a limited number of weddings each year, and Sussex dates, especially the autumn ones, tend to go early.

Everything you'd normally have to dig for — what's included, how many photos, how quickly you get them, what it's actually like to have me there on the day — is on this page.

The places I know by heart

Six venues I've photographed often enough to know the timings, the light at every hour, and the moments most photographers miss. If yours isn't here, it's probably somewhere I've shot anyway — so just ask.

01 — Goodwood Estate

Goodwood House

Recommended Photographer · Up to 150

The proper one. A Georgian mansion, a grand ballroom, a drawing room lined in Canalettos. I was one of Goodwood House's recommended wedding photographers for years — and some of the images the estate still uses in its own marketing are mine. Cedar Lawn for outdoor ceremonies, and some of the best golden-hour portrait ground in West Sussex ten minutes from the house.

Formal grand · Estate portraits
02 — Goodwood Estate

The Kennels

18th-Century Sporting Lodge · Up to 120

Less formal, more characterful. Eighteenth-century stone, a courtyard that takes flowers beautifully, open lawns that flood with late light. One of my favourite venues on the estate for couples who want the Goodwood cachet without the full ballroom.

Relaxed luxe · Outdoor-leaning days
03 — Goodwood Estate

The Hound Lodge

Intimate Lodge · Up to 26

For smaller weddings that still want the estate. Drawing room, dining room, library, and views that go on until they run out of land. I've shot some of the most photogenic intimate weddings of my career in this room.

Intimate · Editorial leaning
04 — Goodwood Estate

The Goodwood Hotel

Contemporary Suites · Up to 170

The contemporary side of the estate. Charlton Suite for larger receptions, Sussex Suite for something more intimate, the Cedar Lawn and Courtyard for ceremonies outside. Cleaner-lined and airier than the house itself — good for a lighter, modern editorial tone.

Modern classic · Bright & airy
05 — Donnington

Southend Barns

Converted Barn · Donnington, Chichester

The Dairy Barn, the Threshing Barn, the mezzanine for speeches, the landscaped gardens that photograph beautifully in every season. Southend is one of those venues that makes my job easier — the light indoors is forgiving, and the fields around it are made for the late portraits.

Relaxed rustic · All-day flow
06 — Chichester City

Chichester Harbour Hotel

Boutique Hotel · Chichester City Centre

Right in the middle of Chichester. Elegant reception rooms, a courtyard that handles a drinks reception well, and a walk to the cathedral for portraits that still feels like an event, not a chore. Good for couples who want the day to feel urban-edged but still Sussex at heart.

Boutique · City-centre

How I Photograph

Light, timing, and the people in the room. In that order.

I'm a creative, editorial photographer at heart — I care about light, framing, and the kind of images that still feel alive in twenty years. And I'm a documentary photographer in practice — I stay out of your day, I don't choreograph moments that should be left alone, and I keep my camera pointed at the reactions rather than the setups.

The result is a gallery of images that look considered when they need to be, and honest when it counts. Printed large on a wall. Sat in an album on a shelf. Still worth looking at in twenty years' time.

Sussex by Season

The year in Chichester

Every season in this part of Sussex has a particular flavour — and a particular kind of gallery that comes out of it. A short, honest note on each.

Spring

Hedgerows and blossom

Soft, clean light and a landscape that's just waking up. Spring at Goodwood in particular shoots beautifully — longer blue hours, cool palettes, and weather that's polite more often than it gets credit for.

Summer

Long evenings, late dances

Peak season for a reason. Ceremonies outside, portraits at eight in the evening, dances that spill onto the lawn. Southend Barns and the Goodwood Kennels come alive in summer — golden, relaxed, and forgiving to photograph.

Autumn

Copper light, warm palettes

Probably my favourite season in Sussex. The woodlands around Goodwood turn every shade of copper, gold, and red, and the low afternoon sun does half my job for me. Autumn Saturdays are the dates that book first.

Winter

Candles and close quarters

Short days, long receptions, and some of the most cinematic weddings I shoot all year. Candlelit ceremonies at Goodwood House, dark-wood barns lit by warm bulbs — winter is made for editorial work.

The Promise in Writing

A limited number of weddings a year.
Your full gallery, within one week.

It's the part of this business I'm most protective of. I only photograph a handful of Sussex weddings a year — which is how I can guarantee every couple their complete, fully-edited gallery within seven days of the wedding. Not six weeks. Not three months. Seven days.

Absolutely wonderful wedding photographer. Very attentive, and gave us exactly the look we wanted. Highly recommended.

Questions Worth Asking

The honest FAQ

The questions every Chichester couple asks me — answered the way I'd answer them over a coffee, not the way a template would.

How many weddings have you actually photographed in Chichester?

Enough that I've stopped counting. I lived in Chichester for twenty years, and for much of that time I was one of Goodwood House's recommended wedding photographers — some of the images they still use on the Goodwood website and in their marketing are mine. Across the Estate (the House, the Kennels, the Hotel, and the Hound Lodge) I'm a regular face. Southend Barns is a venue I could probably walk around in the dark. If you're booking a venue in the Chichester area, chances are I've shot it before — or shot one a field over.

How quickly do I actually get my photos?

Within one week of the wedding. The full gallery, fully edited, delivered online. It's the reason I only take on a limited number of weddings each year — the one-week promise only works if I'm not stacking Saturdays end-to-end.

What's your style — traditional, candid, editorial?

Editorial and documentary, in that order. I care about light and framing, and I leave honest moments alone. You'll have a handful of proper portraits that feel considered and cinematic, and a much bigger handful of unposed, real images — the reactions, the speeches, the ten quiet minutes after the ceremony.

Do you travel beyond Chichester?

Yes. I shoot across Sussex (Chichester, Arundel, Worthing, Brighton), up to London, and internationally for pre-wedding editorial work — I've shot couples across Paris, Iceland, and further. No travel fees within Sussex or London.

What happens if it rains?

Nothing bad. A Sussex wet day actually makes for some of the moodiest, most atmospheric portraits I shoot all year — the light goes soft, the colours go warm, and wet cobblestones reflect. I arrive with backup lighting, backup cameras, and enough experience to find the picture no matter what the weather does.

How do we book?

Send a short message via the contact page. I'll reply personally within a day or two, we'll either jump on a call or meet in person, and if it's a fit we'll hold the date with a signed contract and a small deposit. No pressure, no upsells.
