Wedding Photography at Asia House

Wedding Photography at Asia House

Asia House sits on New Cavendish Street, a five-minute walk from my own studio — a Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse with the kind of understated exterior that gives no hint of what's inside: carved marble fireplaces, high coffered ceilings, and a library lined with bookcases designed by Sir John Soane. It's a genuine favourite for East and South Asian couples, for its intimate scale and decorative restraint. Twenty years of London wedding work, the same editorial-meets-documentary approach, on the street I know better than any other in London.

Why Asia House

The building was begun in the 1770s by the Scottish Adam brothers in their neoclassical style, completed by John Johnson, with interior bookcases by Sir John Soane dating to 1784 — a serious architectural pedigree for a townhouse most people walk past without a second look. It's Grade II* listed, and sits on land that was once part of the Duke of Portland's Marylebone estate.Today it's home to Asia House, Britain's leading pan-Asian cultural organisation, and it's become a genuine favourite for East and South Asian couples in particular — the scale is intimate rather than cavernous, and the decorative restraint of the Georgian interiors gives a look that photographs beautifully without competing with the day itself.

The Spaces

The Fine Rooms

The main ceremony and reception spaces — carved marble fireplaces, high coffered ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Fine Room 1 takes up to 170, with two smaller Fine Rooms available for a more intimate day.

The Library

Lined with bookcases designed by Sir John Soane in 1784 — seats up to 50, and one of the most quietly striking rooms in the building.

The Hutchison Room & Gallery

Additional spaces for up to 80 and 70 guests respectively — useful for a drinks reception or a smaller ceremony alongside the main Fine Rooms.

Whole Venue

Exclusive hire of the full building takes capacity up to 390 for a standing reception.

A Sense of My Style

How I Work at Asia House

Editorial for the portraits, documentary for the rest of the day. The restrained Georgian interiors reward careful, considered light rather than anything showy — I lean into that rather than fighting it. I've photographed a lot of East and South Asian weddings over the years and I'm comfortable with a longer ceremony, multiple outfit changes, or a day built around several distinct traditions in one afternoon. For the ceremony and reception, I stay out of the way and let the day run itself. Quiet throughout.Being a five-minute walk from my own studio means I know this building well, and I'll always walk it with you again before the day regardless.

Portraits Nearby

Regent's Park is a short walk away for genuine open green space, and the quieter Marylebone streets around New Cavendish Street give a softer, residential backdrop than the busier parts of the West End nearby.

Your Asia House Wedding Photographer

I'm Barrie Downie — a London wedding photographer with twenty years behind the lens, working at the editorial end of the craft. My approach comes from photojournalism: I react rather than direct, so what you end up with is a record of what actually happened. My studio is on the same street as Asia House, which means I know the building and the neighbourhood well. I only take on a limited number of weddings a year, which is what makes a one-week full gallery turnaround possible. If you're planning a wedding at Asia House, I'd love to hear about it.
