Castle Howard wedding photographer
Not actually a castle. A baroque house that stood in for Brideshead twice on screen, and one of the few places in England where the building genuinely does half the work.
Castle Howard is worth the drive north. Several of its best rooms are only good at particular times of day — knowing them in advance matters more here than at most venues.
Five places worth knowing
The dome throws light down from above
State rooms, light down one side
Flat and grey at midday, warm at dusk

What Castle Howard actually is
Not a castle, despite the name. It’s a baroque country house in North Yorkshire, about fifteen miles from York, begun in 1699 to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh and finished over the following century. It has been the Howard family’s home for more than three hundred years, and most people recognise it without knowing why — it stood in for Brideshead in both television adaptations.
For photography, the thing that matters is the dome over the Great Hall. It throws light down into the room from above, which is unusual and extremely flattering, and it changes character completely depending on whether the sky outside is clear or overcast.
Light and timing
Yorkshire light is softer and greyer than the south, which suits the interiors and flatters skin. The catch is that in winter it goes early — by mid-afternoon in December you are working with very little. A summer wedding gives you a long, generous evening; a winter one needs the portraits pulled forward, and I’d rather say that at the planning stage than surprise you on the day.

A sunrise shoot at Castle Howard
A couple flew in from Asia for a pre-wedding shoot here, and we started at sunrise outside the entrance — they’d hired a Rolls Royce to arrive in. The weather held, which in Yorkshire is not something to count on, and we had the place to ourselves before the house opened.
Inside, the problem was choice rather than scarcity: every room we walked into was a better backdrop than the last. We worked through the interiors, then back outside into the grounds while the light was still low and long. By early afternoon we were done — they drove back to their hotel, and I drove back to London. They flew home to China to get married, with the photographs already taken.
That’s a pattern worth knowing about. Doing the portraits days beforehand, at a place that means something to you, takes the pressure off the wedding day entirely.

Coming up from London
I travel for weddings regularly and Castle Howard is a straightforward one — I drive up the day before rather than attempt it on the morning, which means I’m on site and unhurried before anything starts. Travel and a night’s accommodation are the only additions to my standard wedding photography rates; there’s no separate premium for working outside London.
Before you book
Can we photograph inside the house?
Which rooms are available depends on what you’ve booked and what else is happening that day — the house is open to the public for much of the year. Worth confirming with the events team early, because it shapes the whole schedule.
How much time do we need in the grounds?
More than you think. The Temple of the Four Winds is a proper walk, not a stroll across a lawn. Allow thirty to forty minutes if you want it.
Do you do pre-wedding shoots there?
Yes — the one above was exactly that, and it’s a good use of the place. See the pre-wedding photography page for how those usually work.
When do we get the photographs?
Your full edited gallery within 24 hours for a smaller wedding, and within a week for a full day.
