Proposal Photography London

You've got the ring, the place and a rough idea of the words. I'm there before you arrive, out of sight, and nobody knows until you're ready for them to.

What you want afterwards is the photograph of the second it lands. That's the job. I've photographed more than ten surprise proposals in London.

Proposals are short, they're nerve-racking for exactly one of you, and they only happen once. There's no second go, so the planning is most of the work.

Hidden, then introduced

I've photographed weddings in London for over twenty years, and surprise proposals have become one of my favourite things to do.

A longer lens, a spot picked in advance, and no eye contact with either of you until it's done. I'll usually have been photographing for ten minutes before the moment, wide enough to show where you are and close enough to see a face.

I don't direct the proposal. You get a rough mark to hit and a direction to face for the light, and after that it's yours. Once you've both turned round, I walk over and say hello, and we do twenty minutes of relaxed photos together.

How it works

How a surprise proposal is planned

By the time you arrive, I've already worked out where you'll stand, where I'll be, and where the light is coming from.

01

You email me

Always email, never a phone you share. Tell me the date, the place and roughly when. If you haven't picked somewhere yet, I'll help.

02

The spot and the signal

The exact spot, not roughly: a bench, a tree, the end of a bridge. And a signal, usually just you reaching for the ring, so I know it's happening.

03

On the day

We switch to WhatsApp for weather calls and running-late messages. I'm in position well before you get there, on a longer lens and a fair way off.

04

After the yes

Twenty minutes of relaxed photos of the two of you, maybe a walk or a drink nearby. Your gallery is online within 24 hours.

Where to propose

Where to propose in London

The best spot is usually one that means something to you both. If you haven't got one, these twelve work well on camera. My pre wedding page has more London locations, and most work for a proposal too.

Holland Park

Kyoto Garden

A Japanese garden with a waterfall and a koi pond. It feels a long way from London. Busy at weekends, so aim for a weekday morning.

The City

St Dunstan-in-the-East

A church damaged in the Blitz and never rebuilt, now a garden with ivy through the old window arches. Small, so go early.

The river

The South Bank at sunrise

The Thames, the bridges and hardly anyone about. The same stretch is packed by lunchtime, so this one is for early risers.

North London

Primrose Hill

The whole city laid out below you. Best in the evening when the light is low and warm, and we pick the spot carefully.

December

Covent Garden and the West End

The Christmas tree and the lights on Regent Street and Bond Street. Crowded, which helps: nobody notices one more camera.

Your hotel

Somewhere private

A suite, a private dining room or a rooftop you've booked. Useful if you'd rather not do it in front of strangers, and it doesn't depend on the weather.

First light

Westminster Bridge

Big Ben across the river. Before seven the coach parties haven't arrived and the light is low and soft. After nine it's shoulder to shoulder.

Sunrise

Tower Bridge and the river

There are six or seven spots around the bridge that work properly, and most people only find one. Sunrise if you want it to yourselves.

Early morning

St Paul's and the Millennium Bridge

The steps and the dome before the office crowd comes through. The bridge is quietest on a Sunday before nine.

Kensington

The Albert Memorial

My favourite spot in London. Gold leaf and marble, with the Albert Hall thirty paces away. Late afternoon, when the sun lights up the gilt.

Mayfair

Burlington Arcade and Berkeley Square

If you're staying at Claridge's, The Ritz or Brown's, it's on your doorstep. Quiet streets on a Sunday morning, and a lot of places to go for a drink afterwards.

Up high

A rooftop or terrace

A hotel terrace or a bar with the City behind you. Book the table, tell the staff what's happening, and I'll be at the far end of the terrace.

Light and timing

When to propose

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are when London looks best. Midday in summer is the one slot I'll try to move you out of, because the light is flat and hard and the parks are full.

Winter is underrated. The light is low all day, there are fewer people in the background, and in December you get the decorations for nothing. Both proposals on this page were in December.

If the forecast looks hopeless, we either move under cover or move the date. We'll talk on WhatsApp that morning, so we can make the call late. And don't rush the kneel: two or three seconds down there is plenty.

Ideas

Three ways to ask

Most proposals I photograph are one of these. Which suits you depends on how private you want it and how much of a plan the two of you normally have on a day out.

On the day

A checklist for the one asking

The photographs mostly come down to a few small things you do on the day. None of them are hard.

  • Send me a photoOf what you're both wearing, that morning. Joe did this before his Covent Garden proposal. In a crowd, it's how I find you.
  • Have a reason to be thereA walk to lunch, a view you want to show them, a photo for your mum. Anything that gets you to the spot without it feeling planned.
  • Don't look for meI'll be there. If you keep glancing round, they'll start wondering what you're looking at.
  • Stand where we agreedFacing the way we agreed. It's the difference between seeing their face and seeing the back of your head.
  • Take your timeTwo or three seconds on one knee is plenty, but don't rush it. Open the box towards them, not towards you.
  • Keep your phone onRunning late, the gates are shut, it's started to rain. A quick WhatsApp and I adjust.

Good to know

Proposal photography questions

How many proposals have you photographed?

More than ten surprise proposals in London, including one under the Covent Garden Christmas tree, plus a few further afield. Coverage starts from £350 for an hour, and your gallery is online within 24 hours.

How much does proposal photography in London cost?

One hour is £350, two hours £550 and three hours £750. That covers the planning, a look at the spot beforehand, the proposal itself, twenty minutes of portraits afterwards, every image edited in high resolution, and a private online gallery within 24 hours.

How long does a proposal shoot take?

Allow an hour. The proposal itself is over in under a minute. I'll have been photographing for about ten minutes before it, and we spend around twenty minutes together afterwards for relaxed portraits.

How do you stay hidden?

I pick my position in advance, use a longer lens from a fair distance, and don't make eye contact with either of you until it's done. We agree the exact spot and a signal beforehand, so I'm not guessing where you'll stop.

Where is the best place to propose in London?

Somewhere that means something to you both is usually best. If you don't have a spot, Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, St Dunstan-in-the-East, the South Bank at sunrise and Primrose Hill in the evening all photograph well. In December, Covent Garden and the West End lights work beautifully.

What happens if it rains?

If the forecast looks unworkable we move under cover or change the date. We keep in touch on WhatsApp on the morning, so the decision can be made late.

Can you photograph a proposal outside London?

Yes. I've photographed proposals outside London, including one at Four Seasons Hampshire. Travel outside London is quoted at cost.

Can you photograph our wedding too?

Yes. A lot of couples come back for a pre wedding shoot, which starts from £850, and then the wedding itself. Booking the proposal gives you a 10% credit towards a pre wedding shoot.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as you know the date and the place. If it's short notice, email anyway. An hour is often easier to fit in than a wedding day.

What if they spot you?

I'm some distance away on a longer lens, and in London one more person with a camera doesn't stand out. If they start looking my way, I move.

Do we need a permit?

For streets, bridges and squares, no. Some parks and gardens, including the Royal Parks and Kew, need a photography permit. I check the spot you've chosen and sort it if it's needed.

Can family or friends be there?

Yes. Some people want family waiting nearby for afterwards. Tell me who's coming and where they'll be, and I'll photograph them joining you.

How many photos do we get?

Around 50 edited images for an hour and 100 or more for two hours, in a private online gallery within 24 hours.

Let's plan it
