An Intimate Chelsea Wedding | Liliya & Charel at Chelsea Town Hall
A romantic London wedding with proper old-school style
Some of the most beautiful weddings I photograph are the smallest ones — no huge guest list, no fuss, just two people who love each other, their closest family, and a city that happens to be one of the most photogenic in the world. Liliya and Charel’s intimate London wedding was exactly that: a personal, elegant celebration that took them from a boutique Chelsea hotel to Chelsea Town Hall by horse and carriage, before finishing with portraits at some of London’s most iconic landmarks.
As a London wedding photographer, this is the sort of day I love documenting. Here’s how it unfolded.
Getting ready at 11 Cadogan Gardens
The day began at 11 Cadogan Gardens — a gorgeous boutique hotel tucked away on a quiet garden square just off Sloane Square in the heart of Chelsea. If you’ve not stayed there, it’s a beautiful Victorian townhouse conversion: think crackling fireplaces, velvet sofas, antique furniture and the kind of understated luxury that makes you feel instantly at home.
For getting-ready photos, it’s a dream. Natural light pouring through tall windows, elegant interiors that photograph beautifully, and the quiet atmosphere you want for those calm pre-ceremony moments.
A horse and carriage down the King’s Road
When it comes to arriving at your wedding ceremony in style, it’s very hard to top a horse and carriage down the King’s Road. Liliya and Charel made the one-mile journey from 11 Cadogan Gardens to Chelsea Town Hall the old-fashioned way — and the reaction from shoppers, tourists and passers-by was brilliant. Smiles, waves, phones out everywhere. For a few minutes, they were the most famous couple in London.
From a photography point of view, a horse-and-carriage arrival is magic. The contrast between classic, timeless transport and the buzzy Chelsea streetscape — red buses, black cabs, King’s Road boutiques — gives you images that feel uniquely, unmistakably London.
The ceremony at Chelsea Town Hall
Chelsea Town Hall has long been one of the capital’s most romantic and popular venues for small civil ceremonies. The building itself is stunning — an Edwardian gem with grand staircases, chandeliers, marble columns and ceremony rooms that have seen everything from small family weddings like this one to celebrity “I do”s.
Liliya and Charel had chosen a small, personal ceremony with just their parents in attendance. There’s something genuinely moving about an intimate wedding like this. No huge audience, no distractions — just vows, tears, laughter and the quiet significance of the moment. Every glance, every smile, every squeeze of the hand is amplified when there are only a handful of people in the room.
Signature London landmark portraits
After the ceremony, we took a drive around some of London’s most famous landmarks to capture a set of signature London wedding photos — the sort of images that instantly say “we got married in London” when you look back at them in twenty years’ time.
London is a photographer’s playground for a wedding day like this. A few of the most popular stops for landmark portraits include:
- Tower Bridge — arguably the most iconic wedding backdrop in the UK
- Westminster & Big Ben — timeless, postcard London
- Trafalgar Square — grand, cinematic, full of energy
- The South Bank & St Paul’s — beautiful across the river at golden hour
- Covent Garden — cobbled streets and charming side alleys
- Notting Hill’s pastel houses — vibrant, playful, Instagram-perfect
Working quickly between locations, with the dress flowing and the city buzzing around them, gave Liliya and Charel a set of portraits that feel joyful, romantic and completely unique to their day.
Why intimate London weddings work so well
A small city wedding like this is becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to see why. A few things I love about photographing intimate London weddings:
- Every moment feels meaningful when only your closest family are there
- Budget goes further on the things that really matter — dress, food, photography, experience
- London is full of beautiful small venues — from town halls to private dining rooms, boutique hotels and member’s clubs
- The city itself becomes part of the story, giving you landmark backdrops no country venue can match
- Less stress, more joy — smaller weddings tend to feel calm and genuinely fun
