Elegance in Motion – Crafting Editorial Magic for RM Sotheby’s at The Peninsula London

As a photographer with a keen editorial eye, I recently had the extraordinary opportunity to merge the worlds of luxury automobiles and high-end lifestyle for a captivating photoshoot. The star of the show? A stunning Delahaye 135S, soon to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s at The Peninsula London this autumn.

The Peninsula London’s newest 5 star Hotel

The Peninsula London, with its fleet of 17 signature green cars and staff who share a passion for automobiles, provided the perfect backdrop for our shoot. This wasn’t just about photographing a car; it was about creating a narrative that would resonate with potential buyers and enthusiasts alike. As well as being a great location for this photoshoot it’s one of London’s best luxury wedding venues.

The Delahaye 135S: A Story on Wheels

This particular Delahaye 135S comes with its own slice of celebrity.  Owned by the Johnny Walker family, it gained fame through an advertisement featuring none other than Jude Law. Our challenge was to capture not just its physical beauty, but also its rich history and the anticipation surrounding its upcoming auction.

Bringing the Vision to Life

To truly showcase the Delahaye’s elegance and appeal, I brought in two models – one male and one female. My goal was to create a series of lifestyle editorial images that would transport viewers into a world of luxury and sophistication. These images were designed to be featured prominently in RM Sotheby’s marketing materials and online platforms.

Directing the Shoot

As I directed the models, I focused on creating scenes that told a story. We had them interact with the car in various ways:
– A glamorous couple arriving for a night out, the Delahaye as their chariot
– The male model examining the car’s exquisite details, embodying the discerning collector
– Our female model sitting gracefully in the Delahaye, highlighting its sleek lines
– Both models engaged in animated conversation near the car, bringing to life the social aspect of classic car ownership

Each pose, each interaction was carefully choreographed to showcase not just the car, but the lifestyle it represents. We wanted potential buyers to see themselves in these images, to feel the allure of owning such a magnificent piece of automotive history.

The Editorial Approach

My editorial style came into play as we crafted each shot:
1. Composition: Balancing the car, models, and architectural elements of The Peninsula London
2. Lighting: Utilising both natural light and carefully placed artificial lighting to accentuate the car’s curves and the models’ expressions
3. Storytelling: Ensuring each image contributed to the overall narrative of luxury, history, and exclusivity
4. Detail shots: Interspersing close-ups of the car’s unique features with wider lifestyle shots
5. Atmosphere: Capturing the ambiance of The Peninsula London to add context and depth

The Power of Editorial Photography for Luxury Brands

This shoot exemplifies how editorial-style photography, combined with lifestyle elements, can elevate a luxury brand’s image. For RM Sotheby’s, these images don’t just showcase a product – they sell a dream, a lifestyle, a piece of history.

My background in wedding photography, where capturing genuine moments is key, blended seamlessly with the polished look required for this high-end automotive shoot. The result is a series of images that are both aspirational and authentic, perfect for RM Sotheby’s marketing needs.
