ROSEWOOD LONDON HOLBORN

EDWARDIAN HOTEL WEDDINGS

I’ve been photographing weddings at Rosewood London since the hotel reopened in 2013, and it remains one of the more interesting central London five-stars to shoot in. The Edwardian Belle Époque architecture, the famous porte cochère arrival arch, the Mirror Room, the courtyard — Rosewood gives you more shooting variety in one building than almost any other London wedding hotel.

If you’re considering Rosewood for your wedding, this page is a slightly more useful version of the standard write-up — what the spaces are like, how I shoot them, and a few practical things worth knowing.

Rosewood London — what it actually is

The basic context. Rosewood London sits at 252 High Holborn, in the area between the City and the West End — five minutes from Holborn, Chancery Lane and Covent Garden tube stations. The building was originally the headquarters of Pearl Assurance, completed in 1914 as one of the grandest commercial buildings of the era. It opened as a hotel in 2013 after a major refurbishment, and has been one of London’s stronger wedding venues ever since.

The architecture is Edwardian Belle Époque — pillared façade, marble interiors, a domed entrance. The hotel’s signature feature for arrivals is the porte cochère: a grand arched gateway through which you drive into a private central courtyard. As a photographer it’s one of the better arrival shots in central London — you’re shooting from inside the courtyard looking out, and the architecture frames every car.

For weddings, the spaces that matter are the Mirror Room (the headline ceremony space, 1920s mirrored detail and a marble fireplace), the Pyx (smaller, more intimate, panelled and quiet), the Holborn Dining Room (for Calum Franklin’s breakfast menu, if you want to combine ceremony and reception in one building), and the courtyard itself for drinks reception or summer ceremonies.

ROSEWOOD LONDON — HOLBORN

FIVE-STAR LONDON WEDDINGS

Why It Photographs So Well

A few reasons specific to Rosewood.

The courtyard. The internal courtyard accessed through the porte cochère is something genuinely unusual for a London hotel — open to the sky, surrounded by the building’s pillared façade, lit at night with festoons. Brilliant for a drinks reception or summer ceremony, and the arrival shots through the arch are some of my most-used Rosewood images.

The Mirror Room. The original 1920s mirrored panelling reflects light through the room and gives photographs a soft, layered quality without any work from me. Best in late afternoon when the side windows catch the light.

Holborn Dining Room. Calum Franklin’s restaurant is one of the most photogenic dining spaces in London — original Edwardian detail, leather banquettes, brass fittings. If your breakfast happens here, the room itself does most of the work.

The grand staircase. The marble staircase leading up from the lobby is the building’s most-shot indoor portrait spot. Works in any weather.

Holborn itself. Five minutes’ walk gets you to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the Royal Courts of Justice, the lanes around Chancery Lane, and Covent Garden’s edges. That gives a properly wide range of portrait options if you want to step outside the hotel for fifteen minutes.

Where I Shoot at Rosewood London

The portrait spots most worth knowing.

The porte cochère arrival arch — the iconic Rosewood frame. Best at golden hour or after dark with the lights on.

The courtyard — for natural-light portraits and the candid drinks-reception stuff.

The grand staircase — for the formal indoor portrait. Marble, depth, drama.

The Mirror Room — for ceremony reactions and the formal couple portraits between courses.

The Holborn Dining Room — if your breakfast is here, the room itself is the portrait location.

Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Chancery Lane — for couples who want to step outside; a ten-minute walk gets you to a properly different urban set.

How I Shoot Rosewood London Weddings

Quietly. I’m not the photographer barking instructions across the lobby or stopping the day for a forty-minute group-shot list. The plan is simple — cover the day as it actually happens, pull the two of you away for fifteen or twenty minutes of portraits when the light is right, and the rest of the time you’ll forget I’m there.

For Rosewood weddings specifically, that usually means: prep coverage in one of the suites upstairs, ceremony coverage in the Mirror Room or Pyx with two cameras, drinks reception in the courtyard or Slaughter House depending on weather, twenty minutes of portraits at the porte cochère arch and the grand staircase, then back into the room for the breakfast and dancing.

Group shots are kept tight. Send me a list of family combinations beforehand and we’ll knock the formal groups out in twenty minutes flat in the courtyard or on the staircase depending on weather and light.

A few practical things

Some things worth knowing if you’re planning a Rosewood wedding.

Bridal prep. The hotel’s suites have huge windows facing High Holborn or the courtyard — the courtyard-side suites are quieter and have better light through the morning. Worth requesting a courtyard view if you can.

Ceremony timing. The Mirror Room looks best for photography between midday and 4pm in winter, 1pm to 6pm in summer, when window light is at its strongest. Late-afternoon ceremonies work fine but you’ll want to factor in interior lighting for portraits.

The courtyard ceiling. The courtyard is open-roofed but the surrounding architecture means it’s sheltered from most weather. Even in light rain it stays usable.

Multi-cultural weddings. Rosewood handles Asian, Middle Eastern and Persian weddings well — the Mirror Room takes vibrant colour palettes, and the kitchens can run kosher, halal, Indian and Persian menus to a high standard.

Logistics. Most guests arrive by car or taxi to the porte cochère; Holborn, Chancery Lane and Covent Garden stations are all within five minutes’ walk. The hotel will sort drop-offs without fuss.

Address. Rosewood London, 252 High Holborn, London, WC1V 7EN.
