Spencer House was built between 1756 and 1766 for John Spencer and his wife Georgiana, a rare Georgian love match.

John Vardy designed the outside, and James "Athenian" Stuart designed the interiors, some of the first neoclassical rooms in Britain. The Portland stone front looks over Green Park. It's exclusive hire from May to September, closed in August, so the Fine Rooms and terrace are yours for the day.

A house that rewards slow portraits

The gilding, the detail and the light off Green Park give you pictures you can't get anywhere else in London.

Editorial for the portraits, documentary for the rest of the day. A house this decorated deserves a more considered portrait session, so I take the time to use it properly. For the ceremony and dinner I stay out of the way.

Photography can be restricted in some rooms because of loan agreements on the paintings. I confirm the details with the events team beforehand, so nothing is being worked out on the day.

A real Spencer House wedding

Letizia and Rob, Farm Street to Spencer House

A ceremony at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Farm Street, then the reception at Spencer House. Before the guests arrived there was time for photographs of the two of them on the staircase and in the Palm Room.

Rob had an Army background, so the cake was cut with a ceremonial sword. It made light work of a lemon sponge.
