Booked by the hour, which suits a register office wedding. Most couples want the ceremony and a walk afterwards, not a twelve-hour day.

Eastbourne Town Hall is a proper Victorian building. A stone portico, a 130-foot clock tower, and a stained-glass window throwing colour across the grand staircase. A far better setting than most people expect from a register office.

Below is what it costs to have me photograph it, the four ceremony rooms and how many people each holds, where we walk for portraits afterwards, and how I work on the day. Most people call it the registry office. It is the same place.

The venue

Why couples choose the Town Hall

The Town Hall on Grove Road was built in the 1880s and has never been dressed down. The portico, the clock tower, the oak panelling and the stained glass over the staircase do the work a florist would have to do somewhere else.

It also keeps a wedding to the essentials. No package to upgrade, no coordinator moving you along. You arrive, you get married, and you walk out onto Grove Road with the sea at the bottom of the hill.

For photographs that simplicity helps. The rooms are handsome without being busy, so the building and the people carry the pictures. And the rooms are small enough that I am never far away. No working from the back of a hall with a long lens.

The four ceremony rooms

They are genuinely different from one another. One thing to know before you choose: the stated capacity counts everyone in the room except the registrars. You, your guests, children, babies, and your photographer. In the smallest room I take one of the places.

The Mayor's Parlour

Up to 20, any day. A circular room on the first floor, set inside the base of the clock tower. There is nothing else like it in Eastbourne. Right for a small ceremony or an elopement. The curved walls mean I work close and quietly, which is where the best pictures are anyway.

The Southbourne Suite

Up to 40, any day. Ground floor, teal and duck-egg blue with peacock-print wallpaper. Brighter and more modern than the rest of the building, and the colour gives the pictures a different feel from the oak-panelled rooms upstairs.

The Council Chamber

Up to 60, weekends only. First floor, oak panelling, paintings and portraits on the walls. The most ceremonial room in the building and the one that photographs with real weight. Ask early if this is the one you want.

The Court Room

Up to 80, weekends only. The largest of the four, on the ground floor, blue and yellow under two chandeliers. The one to pick if you are bringing a crowd. It fills up first in summer.

How I photograph a register office wedding

Documentary, mostly. I watch, and I stay out of the way.

01

Out of the way

I do not direct the ceremony, move guests into position or stop a moment to fix the light. In a room of twenty people a photographer who bustles about becomes the event.

02

Nothing done twice

A ceremony here runs quickly. The registrar's words, the vows, the signing, the kiss, and you are back outside. I plan for all of it, so nothing depends on asking you to do it again for the camera.

03

Then we walk

If you have booked two or three hours, we go for a walk. Nothing formal unless you want it. Mostly the two of you heading down towards the sea while I stay a few paces back.

After the ceremony

Where we go for portraits

Eastbourne is well set up for this. The Town Hall sits on the hill, the sea is at the bottom of it, and the Downs start a few minutes west. Victorian architecture, gardens, shingle and chalk cliffs, all in the same hour.

  • The seafront and pierAbout ten minutes downhill. The pier, the promenade and the shingle. Best late in the day, when the light comes along the front rather than down onto it and the white ironwork goes warm.
  • Devonshire ParkLawns, mature trees and Victorian villas, and the closest greenery to the Town Hall. The obvious choice when the wind is up on the front, which in Eastbourne it often is.
  • The bandstand and Carpet GardensOn the promenade. The bandstand is unmistakably Eastbourne, and the Carpet Gardens are at their best from late spring through summer.
  • Beachy Head and HolywellAbout ten minutes by car, for couples who want the cliffs. Worth it if you have booked three hours and the weather is kind.

Why this costs less than you might expect

Photographers charge partly for the hours in the room and partly for everything around it: the driving, the parking, the hotel, the day written off. For a ceremony at Eastbourne Town Hall there is almost none of that.

01

Not a discount

Nothing is stripped out to make the number look good. Every frame edited, at full resolution, exactly as a couple booking a full day in London would get.

02

What you do not pay for

Travel, mileage and a whole day kept free for an hour's work. That is where the saving comes from.

03

Knowing the town

Which side of the pier works in the morning, and where to go when the wind is coming straight off the Channel. That is hard to plan from a map the night before.

About me

Your Eastbourne wedding photographer

I am Barrie Downie, a documentary wedding photographer with more than twenty years of weddings behind me: London hotels, Sussex barns, destination weddings, and a great many register office ceremonies. My approach comes from photojournalism. I react rather than direct, so what you get is a record of what actually happened.

Whether it is the two of you and two witnesses in the Mayor's Parlour or eighty people in the Court Room, I would be glad to hear about it. You can get in touch here, or check your date and book online.

Eastbourne Register Office questions

How much does Eastbourne Register Office wedding photography cost?

One hour is £225, two hours £400 and three hours £575. The first hour is £225 and each extra hour is £175. Every booking includes every image edited, an online gallery within a week, high-resolution downloads and a gallery link to share. There is no travel charge for Eastbourne weddings.

Can I have a photographer at my Eastbourne Register Office ceremony?

Yes, and no special permit is needed. One thing to plan for: the room capacities at Eastbourne Town Hall count everyone in the room except the registrars, including your photographer. In the Mayor's Parlour, which holds 20, I take one of the twenty places. Worth confirming the arrangements for your room with the registrar when you book.

Which ceremony rooms are available at Eastbourne Town Hall?

Four. The Mayor's Parlour holds 20 and is a circular room inside the clock tower. The Southbourne Suite holds 40, on the ground floor. The Council Chamber holds 60 and is oak-panelled, on the first floor. The Court Room holds 80 and is the largest. The Council Chamber and Court Room are for weekend ceremonies only; the other two can be booked any day. Rooms are booked through East Sussex County Council.

Where are the best places for photos near Eastbourne Register Office?

The seafront and pier are about ten minutes downhill from the Town Hall. Devonshire Park is closer still and the best option when it is windy on the front. The bandstand and Carpet Gardens are on the promenade, and Beachy Head and Holywell are about ten minutes by car for couples who want the cliffs.

Do you charge travel or mileage for Eastbourne weddings?

No. There is no travel charge, no mileage and no overnight cost for weddings at the Town Hall or anywhere else in Eastbourne. That is the main reason the prices here are what they are.

Is Eastbourne Register Office the same as Eastbourne registry office?

Yes, it is the same place. Register office is the official name and registry office is what almost everyone says. Either way, ceremonies are held at Eastbourne Town Hall on Grove Road, BN21 4UG, and booked through East Sussex County Council.

How far in advance should I book?

For a Saturday, particularly between May and September, six to twelve months is sensible, and the Council Chamber and Court Room are weekend-only rooms that go early. Weekday ceremonies are often available at much shorter notice. It is always worth asking, and you can check your date against my diary on this page.

Can you photograph a small ceremony or an elopement?

Yes, and they are some of my favourite bookings. The Mayor's Parlour suits it well: the two of you and two witnesses in a circular room at the base of a Victorian clock tower. There is no minimum guest count, and an hour is plenty for a ceremony that size.
