Horsted Place — what it actually is

The basic context. Horsted Place sits in 1100 acres of East Sussex parkland five minutes outside Uckfield, half an hour from Brighton, an hour from London. The house was built in 1851 by George Myers — but the bit that matters is who decorated it. The interiors were designed by Augustus Pugin, the architect responsible for the Houses of Parliament. That’s almost unheard of for a UK wedding venue, and it gives Horsted a quality of detail you don’t find elsewhere in Sussex.

The grounds were designed by Geoffrey Jellicoe — Italianate terraces, a lake, formal gardens that are some of the finest twentieth-century landscape work in the country. The estate was a regular weekend retreat for the late Queen and Prince Philip in the 1970s and 80s, who were close friends of the previous owners. That history is part of the venue’s appeal, but it’s not laboured — the place just has it.

Today it’s a country house hotel run as a wedding venue. Around 17 bedrooms in the main house, capacity for ceremonies of up to 130, and the kind of personal, family-run feel that the bigger Sussex estates can’t quite replicate.

How I Shoot Horsted Place Weddings

Quietly. I’m not the photographer barking instructions across the terraces or stopping the day for a forty-minute group-shot list. The plan is simple — cover the day as it actually happens, pull the two of you away for fifteen or twenty minutes of portraits when the light is right, and the rest of the time you’ll forget I’m there.

For Horsted weddings specifically, that usually means: prep coverage in one of the bedrooms upstairs, ceremony coverage in the room of your choice with two cameras, drinks reception on the terrace or in the gardens, twenty minutes of portraits in the Italian Garden at golden hour, then back into the house for the breakfast and dancing.

Group shots are kept tight. Send me a list of family combinations beforehand and we’ll knock the formal groups out in twenty minutes flat, on the front gravel or in the Italian Garden depending on weather.

A few practical things

Some things worth knowing if you’re planning a Horsted wedding.

Bridal prep. The house has lovely south-facing bedrooms with big windows and the kind of soft natural light that makes prep photographs do half the work. Worth booking one of the front-facing rooms if you can.

Ceremony timing. The terraces and garden ceremony spots look best between midday and 4pm. Indoor ceremony rooms work in any light.

Weather. Horsted is one of the better Sussex venues in bad weather. Pugin interiors photograph well even in rain; the covered terrace works for outdoor drinks if it’s drizzling; and the lake walk works in any weather (the reflections actually look better when it’s overcast).

Staying over. The bedrooms in the main house mean most of the wedding party can stay on site, which makes the day feel less rushed at both ends.
