Firle Place — what it actually is

The basic context. Firle Place sits in the village of Firle, ten minutes east of Lewes and twenty minutes from Brighton, tucked under the north face of the South Downs. It was built around 1530 by Sir John Gage and has been the home of the Gage family ever since — a continuous five-century occupation that’s almost unheard of for a UK country house, and one of the things that gives the building its quietly distinctive feel.

The original Tudor structure was remodelled in the 18th century with a Caen stone façade, and the surrounding parkland was landscaped in the Capability Brown style. The result is a manor house that reads more 18th-century Palladian than Tudor from the outside, with the original Tudor great hall and Long Gallery preserved within.

For weddings, the spaces that matter are the Long Gallery (the headline ceremony space, panelled, west-facing, brilliant late-afternoon light), the outdoor garden ceremony spot, the courtyard for drinks reception, and a marquee option on the south lawn for larger weddings. Capacity tops out around 150.

How I Shoot Firle Place Weddings

Quietly. I’m not the photographer barking instructions across the lawn or stopping the day for a forty-minute group-shot list. The plan is simple — cover the day as it actually happens, pull the two of you away for fifteen or twenty minutes of portraits when the light is right, and the rest of the time you’ll forget I’m there.

For Firle weddings specifically, that usually means: prep coverage at your accommodation (the Ram Inn in Firle village or one of the local cottages, usually), ceremony coverage in the Long Gallery or on the lawn with two cameras, drinks reception in the courtyard or on the lawn, twenty minutes of portraits in the parkland at golden hour, then back into the house or marquee for the breakfast and dancing.

Group shots are kept tight. Send me a list of family combinations beforehand and we’ll knock the formal groups out in twenty minutes flat on the south lawn or in the courtyard depending on weather.

A few practical things

Some things worth knowing if you’re planning a Firle wedding.

Bridal prep. Most couples get ready at the Ram Inn in Firle village (a five-minute walk from the house) or at one of the local self-catering cottages. The Ram has lovely soft light from the south-facing front rooms.

Ceremony timing. The Long Gallery looks best for photography between 2pm and 5pm in summer, when the west-facing windows are pulling in late-afternoon light. Outdoor ceremonies on the lawn work better earlier — between 12pm and 3pm.

Through the seasons. Spring is bluebell season in the woodland behind the park; summer gives long evenings and lawn drinks; autumn turns the parkland amber and is my personal favourite. Winter weddings work in the Long Gallery and great hall but you’ll want to plan around the short daylight.

Weather. Firle is one of the better Sussex venues in bad weather. The Long Gallery, great hall and courtyard all photograph beautifully indoors and under cover.
