Leeds Castle — what it actually is

The basic context. Leeds Castle sits on two islands in a lake on the outskirts of the village of Leeds, near Maidstone in Kent — five minutes from the M20, an hour from central London, half an hour from Eurostar at Ashford. The first castle on the site dates to 1119; the current building is a mix of Norman, Tudor and 1920s additions, the last of which gave it the bedrooms, banqueting halls and reception rooms used for weddings today.

It’s been a royal residence for six different queens of England — Eleanor of Castile, Margaret of France, Isabella of France, Joan of Navarre, Anne of Bohemia and Catherine de Valois — and was the favourite home of Henry VIII. The Castle is set in 500 acres of parkland with formal gardens, a maze, an aviary, a golf course and the wider grounds — most of which are accessible to wedding parties.

For weddings, the Castle has multiple licensed spaces: the Castle itself for ceremonies and the wedding breakfast, the Maiden’s Tower for smaller weddings and accommodation, and the Castle View Restaurant for larger gatherings.

How I Shoot Leeds Castle Weddings

Quietly. I’m not the photographer barking instructions across the lawn or stopping the day for a forty-minute group-shot list. The plan is simple — cover the day as it actually happens, pull the two of you away for fifteen or twenty minutes of portraits when the light is right, and the rest of the time you’ll forget I’m there.

For Leeds Castle weddings specifically, that usually means: prep coverage in your accommodation (most couples stay in the Maiden’s Tower or one of the on-site cottages), ceremony coverage in the room of your choice with two cameras, drinks reception on the lawn or in the Castle View Restaurant, twenty minutes of portraits at the bridge and around the lake at golden hour, then back into the Castle for the breakfast and dancing.

Group shots are kept tight. Send me a list of family combinations beforehand and we’ll knock the formal groups out in twenty minutes flat on the lawn.

A few practical things

Some things worth knowing if you’re planning a Leeds Castle wedding.

Public visiting hours. Leeds Castle is a working tourist attraction, open to the public during the day. Most weddings happen in the evening or after the public have left, but it’s worth understanding the timeline — the wedding party usually has the Castle to itself by late afternoon.

Bridge access. The bridge over the moat is the iconic photograph spot but it’s also the main route for guests entering the Castle. We’ll usually grab the bridge portraits during the post-ceremony lull when the bridge is empty.

Weather. Leeds Castle is one of the better venues in bad weather — the Castle interiors are big enough that we can shoot indoors all day if needed. The moat looks particularly atmospheric in mist or drizzle.

Staying over. The Castle has its own accommodation across the estate (Maiden’s Tower, Battel Hall, the Castle bedrooms, and the Stable Courtyard cottages). Worth booking some on-site nights for the wedding party — it makes the day feel less rushed.
