Leeds Castle sits on islands in a lake near Maidstone, and it looks the way you'd draw a castle.

It started as a Norman stronghold 900 years ago, belonged to six medieval queens, and was one of Henry VIII's homes. In the early 1900s Lady Baillie turned it into a country retreat for London society. Today you can have the whole of Castle Island for your wedding, bedrooms included.

A venue that needs very little help

The castle on the water is the picture everyone wants, and it's worth planning the day around the light for it.

I time the portraits for when the sun is on the stone and the moat goes still. The rest of the day I work quietly and photograph what actually happens.

Leeds Castle is also a visitor attraction, so I work out with you when the bridge and the lawns will be quiet, and fit the portraits around that.

Lilai and Sisi, twenty dresses at the castle

They set aside six hours before the ceremony just for photographs around the castle and grounds. Sisi's mum had brought around twenty dresses over from China, and Lilai had almost as many outfits. After the ceremony it was the vintage Rolls-Royce outside, then dinner in the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall, where they served tea to their parents during the speeches.
