Camden Town Hall is one of London's great 1930s civic buildings. Portland stone, Corinthian columns, a marble staircase, and St Pancras standing right across the road.

I have photographed weddings here and across the road at St Pancras, and I work the same way at every London register office: quietly, quickly, and with the next-day gallery couples keep telling me about. There's more of my work as a London wedding photographer on the home page.

My style, any register office

How I photograph a London register office wedding

These are from Old Marylebone, Chelsea and Islington, the register offices I shoot most. Camden runs to the same rhythm: arrival, a half-hour ceremony, the signing, confetti outside, then portraits nearby. I work the same way in all of them, so this is what your Camden gallery will look like.

Documentary first. I do not stage the ceremony or move your guests around. Groups take fifteen minutes at most, and couple portraits are a short walk, not a production. Then the whole gallery, every image edited, is online the next day.

Amazing experience! Barrie knew exactly what to do and was very patient with our family. We got married in the Pimlico Room at Old Marylebone Town Hall and had our photos the very next day.

Barrie was the photographer for our wedding at the Old Marylebone Town Hall and we are absolutely delighted with the photographs. He was able to capture all the crucial moments before, during and after the ceremony and the early part of our dinner reception. The challenge of the dark outside when we left the building was no issue – he captured our exit to sparklers and city atmosphere beautifully. Booking, clarifying our wishes and timings were all very straight forward. We would highly recommend Barrie's work!

We wanted it shot in an elopement style as it was just one of the many pre-wedding events before our big fat Indian wedding. He absolutely nailed the brief, knew exactly what he was doing, worked with our mad Indian families really well and captured some incredible photographs… I highly recommend Barrie if you are looking for a no fuss, genuine person to capture the true essence of your big day.

Barrie was fab! He knew Old Marylebone Town Hall really well (even the registrars knew him). He made us feel comfortable and took us to really cute places to get some special shots. Would highly recommend! The colours are also lovely in the photos. Thanks Barrie!

Barrie was the photographer for our civil wedding ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall and he was great! Professional, friendly and creative throughout the day. The photos are amazing, stylish and plentiful, posted in a gallery for us the day after which we really appreciated. Highly recommend him for any event or special occasion.

Why couples choose Camden Town Hall

Camden Town Hall was built as St Pancras Town Hall. Albert Thomas designed it, work started in 1934 and it opened in October 1937. It took the Camden name in 1965, when St Pancras, Hampstead and Holborn merged into one borough.

It is a steel frame clad in Portland stone, with Corinthian columns across the front, and it is Grade II listed. Camden closed it in 2020 for a full restoration and brought ceremonies back in 2023, so the rooms are freshly done.

Couples choose it for the location as much as the building. You walk out of the Judd Street doors and St Pancras is right there: the red brick, the Gothic arches, the clock tower. Very few register offices in London give you a backdrop like that a minute from the ceremony room.

It is also the easiest register office in London for guests to reach. King's Cross St Pancras is two minutes away, with six Underground lines, Eurostar, and trains in from the north and the Midlands.

A photographer's guide

The ceremony rooms at Camden Town Hall

Camden has four ceremony rooms in the town hall, two of which combine into one larger space, plus the Marble Staircase. Largest first.

  • The Council Chamber80 to 160 guests. The historic council chamber and the biggest room in the building. I work from the back and the side aisle during the ceremony, so the wide frame shows the scale of the room and everyone in it.
  • Primrose Room & Heath Suite combinedUp to 100 guests. The two rooms opened up into one, for a wedding that is too big for the Heath Suite but wants something less formal than the Chamber.
  • The Heath Suite30 to 60 guests. Named after Hampstead Heath, and the most contemporary of the rooms. A good size for a proper wedding feel without anyone sitting at the back.
  • The Regent's RoomUp to 20 guests. A botanical feel, and the classic register office size: close family and a few friends, all within a few feet of you.
  • The Primrose RoomThe two of you and up to four guests. Small and informal. In a room this size I stay to one side and keep the camera quiet.
  • The Marble StaircaseThe two of you and your two witnesses, married on the building's best-known feature. Even if you marry in another room, Camden lets you use the staircase for photographs, and it is the obvious place for your first portraits.

The Council Chamber, Heath Suite and Marble Staircase are Camden's premium options, with short readings and a choice of ceremony scripts on any day. Rooms are booked directly with Camden, not through me.

On the day

What the ceremony is actually like

Camden says to allow about half an hour. Readings, vows, rings if you want them, the signing, the kiss, applause. Rings are optional, as they are not a legal requirement.

Photography is allowed all the way through, as long as it is not disruptive. That suits how I work anyway. No flash in your face during the vows, no walking up the aisle mid-ceremony. I pick my spots before you come in and stay there.

Then it is out to the Marble Staircase or the front of the building for groups, and across the road to St Pancras if you want portraits there. The whole thing moves quickly, which is why it helps to have a photographer who already knows the routine of a London register office.

The practical bits

Witnesses, parking and paperwork

Not strictly my department, but couples ask me all the time, so here is what Camden's own guidance says.

  • Two witnessesThey must speak and understand English and follow the ceremony. No ID needed. There is no minimum age, but if in doubt bring an extra adult.
  • Getting thereThe entrance is on Judd Street, opposite the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. King's Cross St Pancras is the nearest station, and buses 30, 73, 91, 205 and 390 stop outside St Pancras International.
  • Parking permitsCamden gives up to five free parking permits for a ceremony, applied for through the council. Otherwise the nearest car parks are the NCPs on Judd Street and at the Brunswick Centre.
  • Music and readingsMusic cannot have religious content, which is a legal rule for civil ceremonies. You can play it from a phone or tablet over Bluetooth.
  • ConfettiCamden's ceremony guide does not spell out confetti rules, so ask when you book. Wherever it is allowed, bring biodegradable petals and more than you think you need. A thin scattering barely shows in a photograph.
  • Giving noticeYou both give notice at your local register office first, then there is a 28-day waiting period in England and Wales. Your certificate is posted to you within 14 working days of the wedding.
After the ceremony

Wedding portraits near Camden Town Hall

This is the big advantage of marrying at Camden. Some of the most photogenic architecture in London is across the road, and King's Cross and Bloomsbury are a short walk either way. Walking times are from the Judd Street entrance.

  • St Pancras archesOne minute, across Euston Road. The red-brick Gothic arcade of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, the lanterns, and the clock tower above. My first choice for a register office portrait anywhere in London.
  • Inside St Pancras stationTwo or three minutes. The great iron and glass roof of the Barlow Shed, and The Meeting Place, the nine-metre bronze couple under the clock. Busy, so we work quickly.
  • The British LibraryAbout three minutes west along Euston Road. Red brick, a wide open piazza and clean lines, and much quieter than the station.
  • Bloomsbury squaresBrunswick Square Gardens is about five minutes south, Russell Square about ten. Trees, Georgian terraces and green space if you would rather have leaves than brick.
  • Granary Square & Coal Drops YardAbout ten minutes north. Fountains, the canal steps and restored Victorian brick at King's Cross, with Regent's Canal just beyond.
  • Lamb's Conduit StreetAbout ten minutes. A pedestrian Georgian street of independent shops and old pubs, and a lovely walk with your guests.

Afterwards

Where couples go after the ceremony

Almost everything is on foot from Judd Street, which makes the day easy for guests.

  • The St Pancras RenaissanceAcross the road. Champagne in the hotel bars, or a full reception. I have photographed there before, see my St Pancras Renaissance wedding photography page.
  • King's CrossAbout ten minutes. Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square are full of restaurants that will take a table of twenty for lunch.
  • BloomsburyFive to ten minutes. Lamb's Conduit Street and the streets around it for a pub lunch or a small restaurant booking.
  • Straight to ParisThe Eurostar terminal is across the road. If you are leaving for a honeymoon that evening, I can photograph you heading in with your cases.
  • By taxiWith two or three hours booked, there is time to head somewhere else for portraits. The South Bank, St Paul's and Tower Bridge are usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes away.

Seasons at Camden Town Hall

The ceremony is indoors, so weather never stops a wedding here. It does change what the streets outside look like.

SpringBlossom and new leaves in the Bloomsbury squares from late March. Soft light on the St Pancras brick.
SummerBright midday sun is harsh on Euston Road, so we use the shade of the St Pancras arcade, which stays flattering all day.
AutumnLow warm light that makes the red brick glow, and the plane trees in the squares turn gold through October.
WinterThe station lights and the Christmas tree under the St Pancras roof. Late ceremonies come out after dark, which suits the lanterns in the arcade.

About me

Your Camden Town Hall wedding photographer

I am Barrie Downie, a London documentary wedding photographer with more than 20 years and 500 weddings behind me.

I observe and react rather than direct, so your photographs are a record of what actually happened. Register office weddings are a big part of what I do: more than thirty at Old Marylebone, twenty at Chelsea, ten at Islington, and weddings here at Camden and across the road at St Pancras.

I recommend a short pre-wedding shoot to anyone nervous about the camera. An hour around King's Cross or the canal and you will know exactly how I work by the day itself.

Whether it is the two of you and two witnesses on the Marble Staircase or 160 guests in the Council Chamber, I am happy to talk it through.

Camden Town Hall wedding questions

How much does a Camden Town Hall wedding photographer cost?

Coverage is priced by the hour: one hour is £350, two hours £550 and three hours £750. Every booking includes all images fully edited, an online gallery within 24 hours, high-resolution downloads and a shareable link for family and guests. Most couples book two hours, which covers the ceremony, groups and portraits across the road at St Pancras.

Is Camden Town Hall the same as Camden Register Office?

Yes. Camden Register Office holds its ceremonies at Camden Town Hall on Judd Street, London WC1H 9JE. The building opened in 1937 as St Pancras Town Hall and took the Camden name in 1965. After a restoration that started in 2020, ceremonies returned to the town hall in 2023.

Where is Camden Town Hall and how do guests get there?

The wedding entrance is on Judd Street, directly opposite the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and St Pancras station. King’s Cross St Pancras is the nearest station, about two minutes on foot, with six Underground lines plus national rail and Eurostar. Buses 30, 73, 91, 205 and 390 stop at St Pancras International.

What ceremony rooms are there at Camden Town Hall?

Four rooms plus the Marble Staircase. The Council Chamber holds 80 to 160 guests, the Heath Suite 30 to 60, the Regent’s Room up to 20, and the Primrose Room the couple plus four guests. The Primrose Room and Heath Suite combine for up to 100. On the Marble Staircase it is just the couple and their two witnesses.

Can you get married on the Marble Staircase?

Yes. Camden offers the Marble Staircase as a ceremony space for the couple and their two witnesses only. It is one of Camden’s premium options, with short readings and a choice of scripts. Couples marrying in other rooms can still use the staircase for photographs afterwards.

Can you take photos during a ceremony at Camden Town Hall?

Yes. Camden allows photographs, video and audio throughout the ceremony as long as it is not disruptive. I work quietly from the side and back of the room, without flash during the vows, and Camden also lets you use the Marble Staircase for photos.

How long is a wedding ceremony at Camden Town Hall?

About half an hour. Camden asks you to allow approximately thirty minutes for the ceremony itself, then time for groups and confetti afterwards. With one hour of photography I cover arrival, the full ceremony, the signing, family groups and a short portrait set.

Where are the best places for photos near Camden Town Hall?

The Gothic arches of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, one minute across Euston Road, are the standout. Inside St Pancras station there is the Barlow Shed roof and The Meeting Place statue. The British Library piazza is three minutes away, Brunswick and Russell Squares five to ten minutes, and Granary Square and the Regent’s Canal at King’s Cross about ten.

How many witnesses do we need at Camden?

Two. They must be able to speak and understand English and follow the ceremony, and they do not need to bring ID. Camden sets no minimum age, but suggests an extra adult witness if in doubt.

How quickly will we get our photos?

For weddings up to five hours, your full gallery is online within 24 hours, every image edited, with high-resolution downloads and a link to share. Most register office couples open their gallery the morning after the wedding.

Have you photographed weddings at Camden Town Hall?

Yes, at Camden Town Hall and across the road at St Pancras. Register office weddings are a big part of my work, with more than thirty at Old Marylebone Town Hall, twenty at Chelsea Old Town Hall and ten at Islington Town Hall, so the rhythm of a Camden ceremony is very familiar.

Is there parking at Camden Town Hall?

There is no on-site parking for guests, but Camden offers up to five free parking permits for a ceremony, applied for through the council. The nearest car parks are the NCP on Judd Street and the NCP at the Brunswick Centre.
