A Stunning Wedding at Cliveden House, Berkshire | Jen & Dharmesh
One of the most iconic country house weddings in England
Some venues need very little introduction, and Cliveden House in Berkshire is firmly one of them. A magnificent country estate perched high above the River Thames, with sweeping formal gardens, centuries of history, and interiors that feel like they’ve been lifted straight from a period drama — Cliveden is, quite simply, one of the most breathtaking places in the UK to get married.
So when Jen and Dharmesh chose it for their civil ceremony, we knew we were in for a truly special day. They did not disappoint.
As a Cliveden House wedding photographer, returning to this estate is always a pleasure — but Jen and Dharmesh’s wedding was one of those days where everything came together beautifully.
Cliveden House: a venue steeped in history
Built in the 1660s and set in 376 acres of National Trust gardens overlooking the Thames in Berkshire, Cliveden Househas one of the richest histories of any country house in England. Over the centuries it has hosted:
- Royalty, including generations of British and visiting monarchs
- Prime ministers and statesmen, as the long-time home of the Astor family
- Writers, artists and thinkers — from Rudyard Kipling to Winston Churchill
- The Beatles, who famously stayed at Cliveden
- Countless weddings, including high-profile society occasions
That layered history seeps into every inch of the house. For a wedding, it means you and your guests are spending the day somewhere genuinely remarkable — a place that already has stories, now adding yours to the collection.
A civil ceremony in picture-perfect surroundings
Jen and Dharmesh chose a civil ceremony at Cliveden, and the venue truly lends itself to it. Cliveden offers a selection of beautifully licensed ceremony rooms — each one elegant, atmospheric and full of natural light — making it an absolute dream for both the couple and the photographer.
The ceremony itself was warm, personal and full of emotion. Jen and Dharmesh were brilliant throughout: relaxed, happy, completely wrapped up in each other and their guests. You can always tell a ceremony is going well when you, as the photographer, find yourself smiling behind the camera the whole way through.
Huge thanks to Emma and the Cliveden team
A day at a venue of this scale runs on the quality of the team behind it, and Cliveden’s is one of the best in the business. Emma and her team at Cliveden House organised the whole day superbly — timings were seamless, every guest was looked after, and nothing felt rushed or under pressure.
From a photographer’s point of view, working with a team this experienced makes an enormous difference. The light is right, the flow is right, and the couple get to actually enjoy their wedding rather than manage it.
A creative photographer’s dream venue
If you’re a couple who cares about your wedding photography — and frankly, if you’re planning a Cliveden wedding, you probably are — the estate is an absolute gift. A few of the reasons Cliveden is one of the most photogenic wedding venues in the country:
- The iconic Italianate facade of the main house, endlessly photogenic in any light
- The formal Parterre gardens with their geometric hedges and colour
- The Long Garden with statues and topiary
- The Water Garden and Pagoda — a stunning location for couple portraits
- Floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the ceremony rooms with soft natural light
- Grand staircases and interiors straight out of a Downton-era drama
- The view across the Thames valley from the terrace at golden hour
You could photograph ten weddings at Cliveden and each one would look completely different. For Jen and Dharmesh, we moved between the gardens, the terraces and the house itself to produce a set of wedding photographs that do real justice to the venue — and, more importantly, to the two of them.
Jen & Dharmesh — brilliant to work with
Beyond the venue, what makes a wedding day great is always the couple themselves. Jen and Dharmesh were an absolute pleasure — relaxed, genuine, up for a bit of direction when it helped the photos, and clearly over the moon to finally be married. Those are exactly the right ingredients for a beautiful set of wedding images.
Thank you both for trusting us with your day, and for being such wonderful company.

About Cliveden House
Cliveden House is a grand Italianate mansion on the banks of the Thames in Berkshire, set in 376 acres of National Trust parkland. Built in 1851 and now one of the country’s most prestigious 5-star hotels, Cliveden has hosted royalty, prime ministers and famous guests for generations. The Great Hall, French Dining Room and Terrace each give a different character to the wedding day.
I find hotel weddings reward a subtle approach. The architecture and interiors do a lot of the heavy lifting, so the photography can focus on the people rather than the venue. That usually means tighter framing and more reportage than you’d shoot in a country house.
