Cordelia and Giles married at the church in West Wittering in the autumn, then held their reception in a marquee just over the road from Cordelia’s parents’ house. The sun was out and it was pleasantly warm. There was a Rolls-Royce, a horse, a lot of children and, after the speeches, a walk on the beach at sunset.
A stop on the way to church
On her way to the church, Cordelia stopped the car so she could greet her horse, which came out to meet her on her wedding day.

Cordelia is a school teacher, and lots of the children she has taught were at the wedding. They had all sorts of roles, from flower girls to pageboys.
A Rolls-Royce to the reception
Giles works for Rolls-Royce, so it was only fitting that one chauffeured them from the church to the reception.
A marquee over the road
The reception was in a marquee just across the road from the bride’s parents’ house. A marquee at home gives you room for whatever you want, and on this day that included a bouncy castle.
Sunset on West Wittering beach
West Wittering sits at the mouth of Chichester Harbour, and its sandy beach is one of the best known on the Sussex coast. The marquee was only a stone’s throw from it. So after the speeches, Cordelia and Giles took a walk down to the sand for photographs as the sun went down.

Planning a West Wittering wedding
- Save time for the beach. The gap between the speeches and the evening is a good moment to slip out for sunset. In autumn the sun sets early, so check the time before you plan the speeches.
- Make the most of a marquee. At home you can add what you like, from a bouncy castle to a car that means something to you.
- Give children a job. Cordelia’s pupils as flower girls and pageboys gave the children a real part in the day.
