Why Brighton Photographs So Well

A few practical things that make Brighton easier to shoot than most south-coast cities.

The light. The sea light here is the unfair advantage. Even on grey days the diffused south-facing light off the Channel gives portraits a softness you don’t get in most British cities. Late afternoon along the seafront, between about 6 and 8pm in summer, is some of the best portrait light in Sussex.

Compactness. Most Brighton weddings happen within a square mile. Register office in Bartholomew Square, ceremony venue at the Pavilion or one of the seafront hotels, drinks at the venue, portraits on the beach or in The Lanes ten minutes’ walk away. We don’t waste an hour in a car like we would for a country-estate wedding.

Variety in one location. In a single twenty-minute portrait session I can get you a Regency-architecture frame at the Pavilion, a vintage-pier frame on the seafront, a colour-pop frame in North Laine and a moody-sea frame on the pebbles. That’s a much wider visual range than most venues offer.

Weather is rarely a problem. Brighton has a personality in any weather. Wet cobblestones reflect, sea mist looks cinematic, the Pavilion looks dramatic in rain, and there are enough indoor backups within a five-minute walk that we can adapt without panic.

Brighton Through the Seasons

Each season has a different feel and a different kind of gallery comes out of it. Worth knowing if you’re choosing a date.

Spring — softer light, the Pavilion gardens come into flower, the sea takes on that washed-out blue you only get on the south coast in April and May.

Summer — long evenings, golden-hour portraits on the beach until 9pm, the Pier in full swing. Peak season for a reason. Saturdays go early.

Autumn — quieter beaches, dramatic skies, warmer light. October is one of my favourite months to shoot in Brighton. The crowds are gone but the city is still itself.

Winter — short days but cinematic. Wet cobbles in The Lanes, sea mist on the Pier, candlelit ceremonies at the Pavilion. December weddings here have a particular mood that no other season touches.

Brighton Wedding Venues I Photograph Often

The big ones, in rough order of how often I’m there.

The Grand Brighton — the headline seafront hotel, big rooms, a ballroom and sea views. The classic Brighton seafront wedding.

The Old Ship Hotel — the city’s oldest hotel, right on the seafront. Smaller, characterful, with the Paganini Ballroom for the breakfast.

Hotel du Vin Brighton — Tudor Revival building tucked behind The Lanes, intimate and stylish, works brilliantly for weddings of around 80.

Drakes Hotel — boutique seafront, ideal for elopements and small weddings; the rooftop terrace makes for an unusual ceremony.

Brighton Royal Pavilion — the Music Room and William IV Room are licensed for ceremonies. The most photogenic ceremony space on the south coast.

Brighton Bandstand — the outdoor seafront ceremony spot, intimate and right on the front.

Brighton Town Hall (register office) — Bartholomew Square, where most of the city’s register-office ceremonies happen.

How I Shoot Brighton Weddings

Quietly. I’m not the photographer barking instructions across the beach or stopping the day for a forty-minute group-shot list. Two cameras, a long lens for ceremony reactions, twenty minutes of portraits in the right light, and the rest of the time you’ll forget I’m there.

For Brighton specifically that usually means: prep shots wherever you’re getting ready, ceremony coverage with two cameras, drinks reception in the venue, twenty minutes of portraits between courses (Pavilion gardens, beach, Lanes — pick one or rotate three), then back into the venue for the breakfast and dancing. Group shots are kept tight: send me a list of family combinations beforehand and we’ll knock them out in twenty minutes flat.

If you’d like a longer portrait session — sunset on the beach, a walk through The Lanes after the breakfast — that’s easy to plan. Brighton rewards a bit of extra walking time more than most venues do.
